What translation project are you working on right now?
Reviewing a government handbook on the process for securing institutional funding. Certain govt bodies seem intent on translating their own official names into English without proper consultation, meaning I have to leave words like "Deputyship of XYZ" instead of "XYZ Agency/Department/etc" in the translation because that is their established title. Interestingly, some of these mis-translations become so widespread that they are essentially standard English within a certain region. I really shouldn't judge, but prescriptivism is so alluring when you're a reviewer 😅 Working on a translation related to anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML-CFT). This acronym is standardized and widely used, but is irritatingly awkward in English - "anti-money laundering" is a descriptor, not a process in itself as "countering the financing of terrorism" is. The Arabic translation, مكافحة غسل الأموال وتمويل الارهاب, is much more natural, removing the "anti-" and simply saying literally "combating money laundering and financing of terrorism". Translating it back into English requires some finesse to preserve the standard terminology while trying to maintain otherwise proper grammar and phrasing. 1 user |
