Work done by a voluntary organisation in a cancer hospital:
nuestro mayor aporte es apadrinar niños del policlínico y darles apoyo durante todo su proceso con la enfermedad, entregar desayuno a los niños y sus padres cada vez que asisten al hospital y conseguir regalos para las fiestas del día del niño y Navidad.
Normally I would translate this as provide support, but that comes just afterwards 'darles apoyo'.
TIA

take under our wing/offer our affection/lend a helping hand
Just offering some alternatives if you are not happy with using support here.

Comment: "Thanks bcsantos! I think 'lend a helping hand' fits perfectly in the context, with no other connotations that could be misinterpreted. In this case is definately not sponsor, no money is changing hands, support is being provided.
Thanks everyone for your help!"

to act as special friends, to act as "godparents"
This works for the literal meaning of "apadrinar".

take under (one's) wing
A more human (or touchy-feely) version.
take somebody under your wing->
to help and protect someone, especially someone who is younger than you or has less experience than you.

"... our geatest contribution is/consists of taking children under our wing and providing (them) support throughout ..."
or similar :)

"sponsor/ing", while correct, sounds a rather businesslike way to put it IMO...
