Genusshotel

German to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations Business network
I was wondering what you would go for if you had to translate "Genusshotel". "Genuss" as a prefix is currently annoying me more than the word "Wellness". it literally appears in all travel-related translations in some form. I thought I might just go with "luxury" or "exclusive", although I suspect it's more about being pampered by the hotel - I often see "Verwöhnhotel" elsewhere. I have pasted some text below for context although I'm mostly translated headings! It does appear that the word might be part of the hotel name but I feel it requires some explanation for English-speaking travellers. Thanking you all in advance :)

Come to think of it, what your client wants from you is much more than a translation. In the German (or rather, Denglish) speaking advertising world it's called name-finding and agencies charge 1/2-1 day for it.
If I was in your shoes I would tell the client just that (in diplomatic words :-)), offer 2 very different options for a start to demonstrate how broad the spectrum is - perhaps even mention that there has been a lively discussion going on in your network - , and offer to spend some more (paid) time on this, preferably in close cooperation with one of their marketing people.
BTW, the Country-House Hotel suggestion does convey much of the sentiment you want. Then again, Austrian clients might think of County & Western and fail to understand what is meant ... => another reason to spend some time on joint brainstorming.

How about.. ... Country House Hotel - out in the country and all the pleasures of country house living: good locally sourced food, good company, comfortably furnished, good service and maybe even hunting, shooting and fishing (or golf, swimming pool and tennis).

With country lifestyle magazines all the rage in the German-speaking world (at least what Germans imagine country lifestyle is), this would probably go down very well with potential customers.

Come to think of it, Homely House is what the owners here are trying to put across :-)

I just found this on the Enlglish website of a Genusshotel in Austria:

"Ritzlerhof – a Selfness Hotel & Enjoyment Hotel in the Ötztal Valley"

Selfness is the new wellness :-)

As an afterthought Of course there is a possibility that *this* particular chain of hotels specifically associates "Genuss" with food only. The only way to find out is by looking at what particular highlights are emphasized for each of the locations.

Yes, we do like to "genießen" ... Actually, Genuss is more than just exellent food. It may include every kind of pleasure to the senses (well, almost every kind :-)) such as a spa area, nice views, a comfy room ... you get the picture. Actually, what you said above about guests being pampered is quite to the point. Not sure how to say it in English, though ...

Just another idea, but not sure if it fits here (not luxurious enough!).
See it a lot in UK.

Boutique Hotel

I realize that Genuss=/=Boutique, but bear with me.

For this US American, "gourmet hotel" sounds rather odd, and it would have to be a hotel with an almost total emphasis on food.

Whereas "Boutique Hotel" is used very frequently, and it simply means a special hotel, where 'special' could refer to food, a spa, especially lovely rooms, etc.

This project did not originate from an idea, but rather from a necessity that was turned into a virtue. Because for culinary aficionados flocking to Riegersburg from near and far, there were no adequate possibilities for staying overnight in the region.

For this reason, the company Gölles Holding GmbH committed itself to the construction of the Genusshotel Riegersburg with the aid of EU funds.

Each of the 45 rooms is named after a Styrian speciality and what the region has to offer in terms of culinary delights is ubiquitous also in the rest of the hotel.

The EU tourism promotion provided stimuli for the entire region.
