So I've come up against a delicate issue in a translation and am not sure how to tackle it.
Context: Brevetto Industriale N° xx per trattamento acque in Taiwan-Cina
I presume it means in Taiwan (China), not in Taiwan AND ALSO in mainland China. Do say if you disagree though, maybe I've misunderstood.
Presuming it is just referring the former, what is the generally accepted way of referring to Taiwan at present? On Wiki it says that names for Taiwan which include the word "China" are politically controversial.

But this is how the translation refers to it...

To me, Taiwan is an independent sovereign nation, but your text is trying to preserve Chinese sensibilities by calling it Taiwan-China. You should retain the hyphen in your translation - "Taiwan, China" would be wrong in my opinion.

I also guess that the client recognized the nomenclature problem and adopted Taiwan-Cina as the solution. As Asker says, the question is delicate, so I would just follow in client’s footsteps and say Taiwan-China rather than second guess the client.
I don’t think it’s helpful to discover the author’s nationality, as we still wouldn’t know what was going through their mind. They may simply be trying to pander to an audience whose nationality is not their own.
