Does anybody have any more info about the "variable turbine housing" that he talked about?
I understand how turbo-chargers work, and selecting the right size has always been a key factor. It's always a trade-off between a reasonable power band and peak power. Race cars tend to have lots of peak power that kicks in late, while regular turbo cars have less peak power that kicks in earlier.
"Variable turbine housing" just sounds strange to me. Does the housing actively change shape? He mentioned that the shape is too complex to cast, which makes me think it can't possibly actually move. So what's variable about it?
Yeah I read that and still didn't quite understand it, then I found a couple videos which really made it clear. Basically the hot side inlet of the turbo can be partially closed off to increase the pressure on the incoming exhaust gases which spins up the turbine faster, and then it can be opened up more as the RPMs increase and more exhaust is flowing. It's almost like having a smaller turbocharger sitting in front of the larger one. Pretty cool.
