naja, in this case you could also say 'opposite cost trends' -- as your text explains, the cost of preventive maintenance is directly proportional to the scope of PM, while the cost of servicing is inversely proportional to the scope of PM.

: this is "umgekehrt proportional", so if one cost doubles, the other halves; that is not the issue of the text.

'inversely proportional' doesn't necessarily have to be linearly proprotional, but you have a point, which is addressed by my added note.
