Source text - Spanish La elite, por lo tanto, se preparaba para celebrar, pero no todos tenían ánimos de festejo. Un clima de intensa conflictividad social enmarcó las fiestas del Centenario. Manifestaciones y huelgas organizadas por los trabajadores socialistas y anarquistas fueron la contracara de los actos oficiales. Lo que estas protestas estaban señalando era que el progreso que tanto pregonaba la elite no sólo comportaba ventajas y beneficios, sino que también tenía costos. Por eso, aquellos que debían cargar con esos costos salieron a las calles para rechazar con sus reclamos las celebraciones.
La conmemoración del Centenario se presentó como una instancia especialmente crítica, en la que las tensiones que recorrían a la sociedad porteña afloraron con particular intensidad. Pero los cuestionamientos y los conflictos no eran nuevos. Porque lo cierto es que el proceso de modernización estuvo marcado por múltiples contradicciones. El crecimiento económico era innegable, pero también demostró ser inestable, sujeto a los vaivenes de la economía mundial. Por eso mismo, la sociedad se tornaba cada vez más compleja y para muchos, en especial para los grupos subalternos, el progreso se traducía en opresión económica, malas condiciones de vida y desarraigo. El sistema político reveló asimismo sus limitaciones.
Translation - English Therefore, the elite were ready to celebrate; however, not all people were in a celebration mood. The Centenary festivities of the Independence were encased by an atmosphere of intense social confrontation. Demonstrations and strikes organized by socialist and anarchist workers were the other side of the official celebrations. These protests actually reveled that the progress so proclaimed by the elite not only involved advantages and benefits but it also gave rise to costs. For this reason, those who had to deal with the costs seized the streets to reject the celebration by means of complaints.
The Centenary celebration happened to be a specially critical moment, where the tensions that prevailed among the society in Buenos Aires erupted quite intensely. However, the questions and conflicts were not new. The fact is that the process of modernization was marked by several contradictions. Although the economic growth was undeniable; it also proved to be unstable, exposed to the ups and downs of the world economy. Hence, society was becoming more and more complex, and for many people -in particular the subaltern groups- progress meant economic oppression, poor quality of life and uprooting. Furthermore, the political system showed its limitations.

Resultó para los entrevistados un tanto cansador el recorrido por todas las marcas, aún las que no conocían. Al ser obligados a responder eligieron respuestas arbitrarias. Por ejemplo, no conocían la marca y entonces elegían la respuesta “es una marca que nunca consideraría”, pero sin creer que la respuesta fuera auténtica: “dije lo primero que me vino a la mente, pero no sé si es lo real que pienso” (Andrea). “Aunque había algunas marcas desconocidas y allí se complicaba un poco más” (Daniela). “Había marcas que no conocía, por ejemplo: Córdoba. Evaluaba las que conocía y de otras no podía decir nada. Las que conocía menos no estaba tan segura de contestar y por ahí no represento al típico consumidor de esa marca” (Pilar). Se evalúa que responder indiscriminadamente y con igual exigencia por aquello que se conoce y por lo que no se conoce resulta cansador para el entrevistado y deteriora la calidad de la información obtenida.

After entering the United States, immigrants had to adjust to life in a different country. They had to learn new customs and a new language. Many of them moved into neighborhoods with other people
from the same country. Immigrant neighborhoods often had schools, clubs, newspapers, shops, and
banks. These helped people start their new lives. Benevolent societies helped families in case of sickness,
unemployment, or death.
Many new immigrants came from rural areas. They lacked the skills to work in modern manufacturing
or industrial work. As a result, many of them had to take low-paying unskilled manufacturing jobs in large factories and sweatshops. Their lowpaying jobs often forced them to live in tenements.

Ya instalados en Estados Unidos, los inmigrantes debían adaptarse a la vida en otro país. Debían aprender costumbres nuevas y otro idioma. Muchos inmigrantes se mudaron a vecindarios donde vivía gente del mismo país. Los vecindarios de inmigrantes tenían colegios, clubes, periódicos, tiendas y bancos. Estos ayudaban a la gente a comenzar una vida nueva. Las sociedades de bene ayudaban a las familias en caso de que alguien se enfermase, se quedase sin empleo o falleciese.
Muchos de los nuevos inmigrantes venían de zonas rurales. No estaban capacitados para hacer trabajos manufactureros o industriales. Por ende, muchos tuvieron que aceptar empleos de manufactura no calificados con salarios bajos en fábricas grandes o fábricas explotadoras. En general, estos tipos de trabajos con salarios mínimos los obligaban a vivir en casas de vecindad.

The intertidal zone is the zone where the ocean meets the shore. This zone is exposed to air for part of the day and also to waves. Organisms of this zone are adapted to survive exposure to air and to keep from being washed away by waves.
The Neritic Zone
The neritic zone is farther from shore.
In this zone, the water becomes deeper as the ocean floor starts
to slope downward. The water is warmer than deeper ocean
waters and receives a lot of sunlight. Therefore, corals and
producers thrive in this zone. Consumers in this zone include
sea urchins, some fishes, and sea turtles that eat algae.
