Below is a short extract from the above document:

The problem of debris removal:
The debris from the earthquake of 12 January 2010 is causing major problems in Port-au Prince and is slowing down construction projects necessary for getting back to normal. In order to improve the process of debris removal and to encourage an economic and environmental approach, Entrepreneurs du Monde, together with the ILO, is developing a programme to support the creation of new businesses. The programme which also includes proposals on debris removal and community action, is an integral part of the ‘Debris Management’ project financed by the IHRC and project managed by UNDP.
Situation in Carrefour Feuilles:
Carrefour Feuilles is an area of 150,000 inhabitants which was hit heavily by the earthquake. Due to the difficulties identified in Carrefour Feuilles, it became a priority area for the Debris Recycling programme. The local economy is based mainly on buying and selling and the unemployment rate is high. In addition the steep terrain makes it difficult to access areas devastated by the earthquake and slows down the removal of some 300 000m3 of debris
Entrepreneurs du Monde is working in the area
Our commitment to the people of Carrefour Feuilles began the day after the earthquake with measures aimed at more than 1000 adults and children. This included sanitation, health education, training, cultural and sports activities etc. Such measures helped to establish strong links with the community, an essential grounding for the smooth running of the debris recycling programme.
