Source text - English Chapter 4: The emergence of a Labour Movement (1877-1899)
Between 1877 and the end of the century, the formative stage of labour’s history drew to a close and a modern labour movement began to take shape. The first strikes in 1877 were followed by the formation of the first trade union organisations. The development of anarchist and socialist groupings also belong to this period. The social and economic transformations of the 1880s had a profound effect on the working class, and from the end of the decade, the state of class struggle became virtually permanent. By 1897 an important step in the formation of a labour movement had been taken with the consolidation of the Socialist Party and the launching of La Protesta Humana (The Human Protest) by the anarchist currents favourable to involvement in the labour movement. These changes created the conditions for a fundamental step forward in 1901, when the first general strike took place. With these events (see Chapter 5) the labour movement assumed a major role in the social and political life of the country. The ‘labour question’, as it was known at the time, was to be the major problem for the state and the bourgeoisie from then on.
