I am a little different from the other freelancers in some aspects:

a. Say no to clients. When I do not have the ability or time to do the job, I will say no to work offers. I have lost some projects because of saying no to clients, but I will continue to do this because it is my principle, the principle of a professional freelance translator.

b. I adhere to the following quality control procedure for each translation, editing and proofreading projects:

A. I read the source text to get a good understanding of it.
B. I ask native speakers or the client for clarification if there is anything unclear about the source text.
C. I translate the document.
D. I read the source text aloud word by word to identify any mistranslations or missing parts.
E. I read the target text aloud word by word to identify any mistranslations, grammatical errors, unnatural flow, and any errors in punctuation, format or space.

To help you better learn about me, let me tell you a story. It happened in mid 2011. I was working on a project for a renowned translation agency. You may know that when you translate for translation agencies, they would usually ask a proofer to review your work. Sometimes they would send you the proofed translation and ask you to review the changes made by the proofer and accept the changes appropriately. When I sent my translation to the project manager, I told her I had noticed three errors in the source text. The next morning when I woke up, I received an email from the project manager, saying that the client has reviewed the source text and has accepted my changes, but the proofer had delivered the file before they could send her the changes. The project manager wanted me to review the suggestions made by the proofer.

The proofer made 4 suggestions, 3 of them were the corrections I made in source text. The suggestions were raised in the comment boxes because it was a ppt file, with a short comment: wrong translation. So I had to change them back. As a translator working for the translation agency, the proofer is also a professional translator in this community. I hope she is not reading this text. She might not be happy about this:-)

Then I asked the project manager: "You were having the file translated into several languages. Did any translators in the other language combinations tell you about the errors in the source text?" The project manager replied: “I had 1 translator tell me, but he didn’t get all of them. He mentioned only 1.” The project manager did thank me for what I had done for the project.

Are you looking for translators who translate blindly and follow everything in the source text without asking why and then produce a word-for-word translation? Or are you looking for someone who always tries to understand the logic behind the text and always try to produce a translation that is accurate, natural and suitable for its target audience? You know who to choose.

If I am a good translator, I will stand out sooner or later. If I am a bad translator, people will know sooner or later. So I always tell myself: Be careful with every project. You could lose a client for it.
