Sonya Sklaroff’s new exhibition, New York Portraits, presents a New York that everyone knows
but with which few are truly intimate. Like pictures of your grandfather in younger days, the
views are familiar, yet invoke images that are fresh and revealing. Sklaroff’s oil-on-panel works capture New York as its moods change throughout the day – the morning warmth as reddish hues permeate the air, the afternoon intensity as the sun strikes the buildings, the evening darkness as shadowy forms maneuver between bursts of neon light.
Bold contrasts of light and shadow illuminate the dramatic nature of New York City in Sklaroff’s
A bright red umbrella complements the subdued colors of a cloudy New York in Midtown Snow. The overwhelming complexity and interconnectedness of the metropolis is revealed through rooftop shadows that form an architectural labyrinth across Water Towers and Skylights.
Sklaroff’s compositions highlight aspects of the city often invisible as a result of their ubiquity. Water towers, fire escapes, and traffic lights – unnoticed in day-by-day New York life – become leading players in an urban drama juxtaposed against an expansive sky. Sklaroff’s imagination leads us through a city without boundaries even while remaining grounded in faithful realism. The truth of New York City may be objective reality, but our interpretation is imbued with new meaning as we see through the eyes of an artist.

La nouvelle exposition de Sonya Sklaroff, intitulée Portraits de New York, présente un New York familier à tout un chacun mais avec lequel, peu d’entre-nous sommes réellement intimes.
Un peu à la façon des photos de jeunesse de nos grands-parents, ces visions nous sont familières tout en évoquant des images neuves et originales. Les œuvres de peinture à l’huile sur bois de Skarloff capturent la ville au fil de ses états d’âmes quotidiens – dans ses dégradés de rouges intenses qui infiltrent l’air du petit matin, avec l’intensité de ses couchés de soleil qui se reflètent sur les immeubles en fin d’après-midi et la densité de ses nuits tandis que les ombres se déplacent entre des éclats de néons.
Dans l’œuvre de Skarloff intitulée Late Afternoon Rooftop Water Towers, (Châteaux d’Eau sur les Toits en fin d’Après-midi), les contrastes forts d’ombres et de lumières mettent l’accent sur la nature dramatique de la ville. Dans Midtown Snow (Neige sur le Centre Ville), un parapluie rouge vif contraste avec les tons pales d’un New York nuageux. L’incroyable complexité architecturale de la métropole est révélée au travers les ombres des toits qui forment une sorte d’infini labyrinthe dans Water Towers and Skylights (Châteaux d’Eaux et Lucarne.)
Les œuvres de Skarloff, mettent l’accent sur les aspects invisibles de la ville dans son omniprésence. Châteaux d’eaux, échelles d’incendie, feux de signalisations - tant d’objets invisibles au quotidien New Yorkais - deviennent les protagonistes d’un drame urbain qui se joue sur un fond de ciel expansif. L’imagination de Skarloff nous mène à travers une ville sans frontières, alors même qu’elle repose sur une architecture au réalisme authentique. La vraie nature de New York City relève peut être d’une vérité objective, mais notre interprétation n’en est pas moins colorée d’un nouveau sens alors que nous la voyons a travers les yeux de l’artiste.
Skarloff crée des tableaux de New York d’une vitalité et d’une force déconcertante… des tableaux qui inspirent et étonnent… des tableaux qui changent notre perception de façon subtile et immuable.

I am a Native French Female .I work part time as a College
Professor. at St Johns University , Queens and at BMCC, New York. I mainly teach Speech and Theatre but sometimes teach writing for business.
I also work as a free-lance translator and interpreter in the field of Performance Studies, Art & Finance, Marketing and Publicity as well as Tourism. I did work for the UNICEF and the United Nations as an interpreter. I worked on many occasionx for the Franco- American Comission. I also worked as a Translator for the Lincoln Center Theater Festival.
I have two Masters, one in International Economy & Banking and the other in Performance
Studies. Both of my masters are from La Sorbonne in Paris.
I have a background in performance as an Actress and have and excellent contact and
presentation when it comes to being an Interpreter.
I came to The US ten Years ago on a fellowship from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
And am illegible to work as a consultant.
