American middle distance runner Bridget Franek will be competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. A U.S. junior silver medalist in 2006, she won bronze in the NCAA outdoor championships in 2008 before going two better in 2010 by winning the title. An outdoor bronze medalist while still at the college level, Franek was runner-up in the national championships in both 2011 and 2012. Second in the U.S. Olympic trials to Emma Coburn, Franek only has an outside chance of a medal in London. Kenya’s Milcah Chemos Cheywa and the Ethiopian pair of Sofia Assefa and Hiwot Ayalew are the standout favorites for the three podium positions, having posted nine of the 11 fastest times in the world this year.
URU - Luis Suarez
A dynamic playmaker capable of producing his own scoring chances or setting up teammates, Suarez may also be the most controversial soccer player at the Olympics. While his scoring record is outstanding - he had 28 goals in 54 games for Uruguay's full national side - the Liverpool striker found himself embroiled in a highly controversial incident last season when he was accused of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra during a match. The club backed Suarez, claiming cultural differences, but he was ultimately suspended for eight games. In the ensuing meeting between the clubs, Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand, and Liverpool forced him to publicly apologize. Suarez was also involved in perhaps the most controversial moment of the 2010 World Cup when Uruguay faced Ghana in the quarterfinals. In overtime, he reached up with his hands to block a shot on the goal line and was issued a red card as Ghana was awarded a penalty kick. But Asamoah Gyan missed the kick and Uruguay went on to win in penalties. Despite these incidents, Suarez is one of the most prolific scorers in the world, tallying 45 goals in 43 games for Holland's Ajax during the 2009-10 season before moving to Liverpool. He also led Uruguay to the 2011 Copa America title, scoring four goals with one coming in a 3-0 win over Paraguay in the final.
CHN - Yuzhuo Hou
Ranked No. 2 in the world in the 57 kg weight class, Hou seems to have a good opportuntity to add to her already impressive resume in London. Winner of 24 of 30 registered fights in her career, Hou first made a name for herself with a second-place finish at the world junior taekwondo championships in 2004. She later won gold at the 2009 and 2011 worlds. One month after taking third at the 2012 German Open, Hou won silver at the Asian championships in early May. Given her recent momentum, Hou could make her first Olympics a memorable one.
