As a star project for cross-chain communication, Polkadot is a sharded heterogeneous multi-chain architecture. Unlike Bitcoin employing proof of work protocol, Polkadot uses a nominated proof-of-stake algorithm, proposed by Ethereum’s co-founder Gavin Wood and developed by the Web3 Foundation. Polkadot's first token sale closed on Oct 27, 2017, raising a total of 485,331 ETH. It currently has an allocation of 1 billion DOT tokens.
Relay Chain is the central chain of Polkadot, which is responsible for the network’s shared security, consensus and cross-chain interoperability.
Polkadot Architecture
Polkadot consists of Relay Chain, Parachains and Bridge.
Parachains connect to the Polkadot Relay Chain that can optimize their functionality for specific use cases, including a decentralized finance (DeFi) infrastructure and NFTs. Parachains attach to the security provided by a Relay Chain and can have their own tokens and interoperate via bridges.
Bridge allows parachains to connect to external networks like Ethereum and Bitcoin, serving as a communication channel for chains in isolation.
Auction Timeline & Rules
Polkadot slot auctions start from November 11, with 2 Batches (11 auctions) in total.
The first batch of 5 auctions would take place with 1 new auction each week, with the second batch of 6 auctions to take place with 1 new auction every two weeks.
Parachain slot auctions follow a candle auction format. Each auction consists of two periods: a two-day period of initial security bidding, during which the auction keeps moving, and a five-day ending period, during which the auction can end at any point. Before it ends, the project with the largest number of DOT tokens raised will win the bid to have a maximum lease duration of 96 weeks for the slot.
Voting Rewards
If the project wins the bid, on-chain voters will share 100 million GLMR tokens based on the proportion of DOT tokens they contribute against DOT tokens contributed by all voters; voters on Huobi Global will share the rewards that the platform can get based on their DOT tokens voted.
Huobi Global will distribute 30% of the token rewards to voters shortly after Moonbeam turns on the transfer function, and the remaining 70% will be distributed once a week (96 weeks in total). Please refer to the actual receipt of user rewards.
