- Als Graswurzelbewegung wird im deutschsprachigen Raum eine politische oder gesellschaftliche Initiative bezeichnet, die aus der Basis der Bevölkerung entsteht.
Es besteht weitgehender Konsens darüber, dass der Begriff ursprünglich aus dem angloamerikanischen Sprachraum stammt. Die zweite Ausgabe des Oxford English Dictionary verweist auf „McClure’s Magazine“ vom Juli 1912, wo die „Graswurzel” erstmals im Kontext einer Kampagne oder Organisation verwendet wird. Mehrere Quellen legen nahe, dass der Begriff aus dem Umfeld von Theodore Roosevelt und seinem damaligen Präsidentschaftswahlkampf stammt. Die „grass roots“ sollten für den Kandidaten gewonnen werden, also die einfachen Menschen aus der breiten Masse.
Die Erstverwendung des Begriffes im Deutschen ist ungeklärt. Der Anarchismusforscher Günter Bartsch führt ihn auf ein vom US-amerikanischen Dichter Walt Whitman schon früher inspiriertes Konzept eines „grassroots movement” zurück. Andere schreiben die Begriffsbildung dem Friedensforscher Theodor Ebert oder ungenannten Personen aus der einfachen Bevölkerung zu. Wikipedia - by Anja C.
