- El teatre naturalista, amb un llenguatge modern i molt menys imaginatiu, va
assolir allò que l'exèrcit clàssic havia predicat sempre sense cap intenció
de dur-ho a la pràctica: la imitació de la natura, i de la natura humana,
encara que resultés que aquesta natura fos molt mes prosaica i terrenal.
Dit altrament: la reproducció de la realitat a petita escala que es va
proposar de fer el paradigma naturalista va tenir com a conseqüència,
entre d'altres coses (com ara l'aniquilació definitiva del vers com a patró
textual o el bandejament d'altres convencions escèniques com el monòleg
o l'apart), la inversió d'un enorme esforç en la definició precisa d'uns
personatges que semblessin manllevats a la vida, individus determinats
per les condicions socials i ambientals i per l'herència genètica però
immediatament reconeixibles com a caràcters independents.

In essa egli corregge o addirittura capovolge il senso delle parole destinate allo scambio dialogico.
