Hi all, Sorry if this is the wrong topic as I don't post on here very much. I notice the UN is in the process of announcing translation competitive exams this year (I know that a French one has been announced and also talk of an English one at some point later on in the year. I notice the UN is in the process of announcing translation competitive exams this year (I know that a French one has been announced and also talk of an English one at some point later on in the year. Would anyone have any hints for any hopefuls wanting to sit the exam? I've sat the English translation (source languages: French and Spanish) and editing ones in the past myself and needless to say failed so wondered if anyone on the forum might have any hints....I won't go into the details but can discuss off topic if anyone has any specific (inside or otherwise) knowledge.... As far as I can see, if you're a native English speaker, you need French as a source language, correct? I work from Spanish and Russian, quite annoying if I couldn't get the chance to take part! Paul.

What do you mean by "needless to say failed"?
Hi Annett, Only that had I passed it I probably wouldn't be asking for hints (i.e. I probably wouldn't be looking to sit it again!). I will confess that I found the exams quite tough because they are without any dictionary at all (whcih personally I don't think is a terribly realistic working situation but anyway) and also involve précis-writing of which I have very little experience.... | | | kriddl Germany English to German + ...
Hello hs9jlp, a little late remark on your post: thanks for drawing my attention to the job openings! I applied for the position as a German translator and last week I sat the exam. And yes, you were right about it being rather tough; I thought so, too. I hope your exams went better this time! Best wishes

Did you mean just the translation exam, to translate, or the interpreting exam | Jul 28, 2012 |
UN uses mostly interpreters. There are some translation exams, I think as well, but the interpreting exam is totally different from the translation exam. | | | Robert Parry United Kingdom Local time: 03:01 French to English + ... TOPIC STARTER
HI there, Ah thanks for the reply. Yes, I tried the English ones (they were a couple of weeks)....still quite tough but think I did better than last time at least. But we'll wait and see for the results!
