I see this product is being advertised and I'm interested because I like the idea of having access to MT subsegments using hotkeys. Is this indeed what it does? Any experiences to share? | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 14:49 Spanish to English + ...

Being a superficial user of most software, I don't understand what the bit about "MT subsegments using hotkeys" is, but I've used GT4T on and off for a few months now and I find it helpful, and smarter than Systran whch I used to have.
However, a word of warning: it often omits key items - such as "not" - from text chunks so you really need to be careful to avoid slip-ups. It seems to have a tendency to summarise and simplify which I'm not always keen on.
PS: And it only works if you are connected to internet, unlike earlier MT programs.

Not sure I understand the jargon either but this is what it does:
Select the text to be "translated"
Click on Ctrl+J
Voilà

It's not really an MT program (such as, e.g, Systran). It's essentially an interface to Google Translate, sending your selected text to GT and retrieving the translation.

Sorry, where I said hotkey I meant keyboard shortcut. | | | Alex Lago Spain Local time: 14:49 English to Spanish + ... Does use keyboard shortcut | Apr 2, 2012 |
As others have mentioned GT4T (which I use and think is very useful) is just an interface with Google Translate (Dallas Cao the programmer takes care of paying Google), so if you think Google Translate is useful than GT4T is very useful because it allows you to select text in any window and by pressing a keyboard shortcut (by default Ctrl+J) you replace the text you selected by its translation. If you don't think Google Translate is any use the you won't find GT4T useful either. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 14:49 Spanish to English + ... If it walks... | Apr 3, 2012 |

Ok, I surrender. But, potayto, potaahto. It's a program, it sits on my machine, and it translates. It does what Systran does, but better. So, in my layman's understanding it is simply a web-based translation program, commonly known as MT... so sue me

GT4T does a little more than pure Google Translate does.
You can maintain a glossary file and GT4T can use the glossary file to "translate" your text before sending it to google by checking this "pre-translate" option. In this way, the "translations" returned for certain terms are always correct.
