f. Formatting errors

• Please mark your changes in the Arabic pdf file in such a way that a non-Arabic speaking person would be able to insert your corrections accurately.
• Please do not re-write the translation with your personal preferences.
• Please write any additional comments you wish to make on a separate sheet

how will you charge for it, using hourly rate or word, and in case of word rate should it be half the normal rate of translation or much or less?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mahmoud,
This a rutine instruction, I hope you understand ABC&D of the instructions very easily. As per E instruction you have to check the punctuation marks in target and find whether they are consistent to source.
F: Formating error means; if the font is cracked, garbage.

Now write comments in English and put your suggestion (target language typing) in that font. Still you are not satisfied with the comments you made in the box, just write your detailed report in word. doc file and attach to mail.
When the file goes back, a non linguist can read in English comments and copy your suggested translation and put in the place of the previous translation(using find command).

I read them all Fabio Aug 11, 2008

Dear Sudarshan Harshe, and Fabio,

Thanks for your comments,

I read all the topics you posted Fabio on this concern, it really took alot of time, and what I understand from all those forums and negotiations is that the best one to define the term of proofreading or Editing is the client you are dealing with, and also the best choice for Editing or proofreading or whatever the client name is per hour if the material was too bad and need to be retranslated, otherwise it wi

Thanks again Fabio and please correct me if i am wrong in my conclusion,
Thanks also Sudarshan for your advice.

That is nonsense Aug 11, 2008

Please proofread the translation against the English source text

Ermm... Proofreading has nothing to do with the source text. Either these people don't know what they're doing, or they are trying to pay you a proofreading rate for a reviewing job...

They reall know Viktoria Aug 12, 2008

Thanks Viktoria for your comment, I believe they know what they are doing but as you say they are trying to have a revision job for a proofreading rate, and in this case would you suggest to as for my normal hourly rate or ask for half of my translation rate?
Thanks in advance

Ways to charge for reviewing Aug 12, 2008

If you want to charge an hourly rate, you should charge your full translation hourly rate. If you take half as much time to review the material as you would have taken to translate it, then automatically, it will cost the agency half as much money if you charge the same hourly rate. Never sell your time under your regular translation hourly rate - an hour of your time is an hour of your time.

Never sell your time under your regular translation hourly rate - an hour of your time is an hour of your time.

If you want to charge by the word, then I recommend for starters to charge by the target word. After all, it is the target text you will be examining, correcting and commenting on. As for the rate itself, charge as little or as much as you think it is worth for you. In general, reviewing is charged about a third to a half of your translation rate - but there are cases where it is worth less or more than that range. That is up to you to see. But yes, half your translation per word rate should be fine, especially if nobody will be proofreading your work before submitting to the end client (in which case you are both reviewing and proofreading).

All the best!
