Hi,
I am trying to get a picture of the standards - or best possible standards - applied to translations with Trados. I am not very expert on Trados and find it incredibly time-consuming, preferring to keep words in my head (I'm an interpreter too) and search phrases from old translation file folders when I know I've seen something before and can't remember it... BUT I need to know what percentage people charge for the 100%/ full matches (30%?) and the fuzzy matches (60%?). Any feedback ... See more Hi,

Sally I fail to understand why you use Trados a give Trados rates if you don't take advantage of its functionality. I think you should consider the following:
You say it is time consuming, it is intended to save you time if it is adding time you are doing something wrong, maybe you need some Trados training, Proz offers quite a lot of info on that.

It might be time consuming but you should seriously consider creating a TM or TMs from your past jobs, "search phrases from old translation file folders when I know I've seen something before and can't remember it" is a very time consuming thing and there are bound do be things you can't remember that are there, if you align your old jobs and create a TM you can search that TM which is a lot more than efficient and quicker than looking through your files. ▲ Collapse

I use Trados when it is insisted upon by clients, and only for very repetitive texts (which I should remember but somehow financial terms are the ones that don't stick...).
I find it time consuming because from the bilingual file to the cleaned up file I have found it leaves out some bits even when claiming a perfect clean-up. However I have also heard that Trados 2007 does not like Office 2007 - unfortunately I skippe... See more Thanks everybody for your help.

It takes me seconds to seek a phrase using search in my folders - I have to say that I rarely need to look anything up at all - I have been translating professionally since 1986. I can speed read, and I began on a non-electronic typewriter (when the biggest technology problem was the difference between the UK/US and Italian keyboard, and how to avoid a build-up of tippex), and although I had a modem in 1991 there was no internet at the time... Basically I moved from academic language translation to professional translation and work experience when there was no technology - and I think it makes me a good linguist. As for speed, I have translated 27 250-word pages in a morning on a straightforward subject ...
