From my experience with Italian agencies, indeed they would find it unreasonable to pay in 30 days. It's in their blood, and in their customer's blood. They have the money, but don't feel it is quite sensible to pay quickly.

This used to be the case in Spain, but today everyone --except local, regional, and national governments-- tends to pay in 30-45 days. It just does not make sense to keep the money any longer given the current interest rates paid by banks.

I think you cannot make your income depend on Italian agencies. In my case, I currently work for only one, and not because I need it, but mostly because they are very nice people and I enjoy doing business with them.

I've seen signs of this too; two UK agencies that contacted me recently, for which I had never worked before, specified 45 days as the payment term in their contracts (and even then, one of them missed its own deadline and needed a reminder; the other paid within 30 days, as it turned out). If what I've recently read on the BB and in the fora is to be believed, yet another reason why these time lags work against us is the fact that some agencies now seem to operate a system whereby PMs do their utmost to find mistakes (which may or may not be "mistakes" as such) as a way of trying to slash the price that was initially agreed on. In one thread that I saw recently, a translator was told by an agency, after mistakes were found (some of which she acknowledged, but not all), that it wanted a sizeable discount. I don't know what she did in the end, but she seemed inclined to cave in because the longer she fought them, the longer it would be before she got any money at all. So, the fact that agencies are given time to pay means that they can effectively hold a translator's money to ransom, and the more time they have, the more opportunity they have to try this on. I don't think it's a common practice, thankfully, but it's something I've read about quite a few times lately.

Since there are lots of agencies that are paid upon r.e.c.e.i.p.t. of the order, not after delivery of the result, I wonder what's wrong in Italia with ordering translations directly from a translator. 45 days, what? 60 what? Don't Italian translators market their services to clients directly? I personally cannot imagine myself offering services to a 45 days or a 60 days agency.
