Charging advice: translating German art history

Hello,

I've been asked to quote for the following. Translate a three-sided document from German to English.
Number of words is not(yet) known. Subject matter is: art history/social history.
Question: what is the going rate for native English speakers (fréelance) to charge. A price range is finr as I'm just looking for a guide. Thanks

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. It's just that the obvious answer to this is "your normal rate". It doesn't seem as though there's anything unusual about the job.

If you don't have a "normal rate", then you can find some general ideas on the "community rates" tool here and on (some) of the translators' association sites. The one here on ProZ.com can be a bit skewed for some language pairs, as it relies on information ... See more

The one here on ProZ.com can be a bit skewed for some language pairs, as it relies on information submitted by translators, but it should give a fairly good guide for your pair. The other way is to actually calaulate what you need to earn to enjoy a reasonably comfortable life. Look at the "rate calculator" tool here for that.

Since you appear to be living in Germany, why not get in touch with the BDÜ or a similar organisation? Imo that's the place to start.
