Here is my very first question on this forum:
I have been thinking about contacting one of my regular clients who is specialised in Finance, to suggest the creation of a trilingual glossary (English, French, Spanish) without definitions.
The terms and segments would be drawn from the different translation memories and all the documents we have already translated.

Knowing that the translations of the terms would be validated by the client himself, and that the final product could even be marketed (more probably in digital version) how would you suggest that I charge for this service?

Voici ici ma toute première question sur ce forum :
J'ai pensé contacter l'un de mes clients récurrents, spécialisé dans les finances, pour lui proposer d’élaborer un glossaire terminologique simple (sans définitions) trilingue (anglais, français, espagnol). Les termes et segments seraient tirés des différentes mémoires de traduction et des documents déjà traduits.
Cet outil pourrait donc s’avérer être une tache de longue haleine (2 a 3 mois) mais surtout très utile pour faciliter le travail des traducteurs avec lesquels je collabore et pour homogénéiser le vocabulaire utilisé dans les nombreuses publications du client en question.
Sachant que les traductions des termes seraient validées par le client lui-même, et que le produit final pourrait même être commercialisé (plus probablement en version numérique) comment puis-je facturer cette prestation ?

I would worry about what the client thought about THEIR data being used in such a way

I would worry about what the client thought about THEIR data being used in such a way
The terms are to be extracted from glossaries and TMs.
PS: for extracting bilingual terms (term pairs) from TMs, I highly recommend Synchroterm (https://terminotix.com/index.asp?content=item&item=7&lang=en ).

In many instances you may have to research missing terminology or correct errors in the databases you are relying on.

Dear Salim,
The creation of a glossary without definitions would take hours or days in most language pairs. Your client might be put off when you suggest delivering a glossary worth months of your time.

Je fais systématiquement un glossaire pour chacun de mes clients. Je n'aime pas perdre mon temps à chercher un terme que j'ai déjà traduit sans me rappeler ce que j'ai fini par mettre.
Avec un client particulièrement exigeant, qui m'appelait pour me demander à justifier mes choix, je marquais également le nom du texte où je l'ai traduit pour la première fois et ma source.

Il a fini par me demander si je pouvais lui envoyer mon glossaire, pour le distribuer parmi ses collègues. Comme ça, ceux qui n'avaient pas envie de me faire traduire un texte pouvait l'utiliser pour veiller à ce que les textes soient toujours harmonieux entre eux.
J'ai compris que l'envoi de ce glossaire pourrait réduire la quantité de travail que cette société m'envoyait, et j'ai donc fait un devis avec un forfait assez élevé (il me semble que j'ai multiplié mon tarif au mot par 5, puis j'ai arrondi à la hausse). J'ai aussi enlevé toutes les informations sauf la terminologie pure (et donc, le nom du texte où je l'ai utilisé, ma propre source d'information et tout autre commentaire...)
Finalement je me suis inquiétée pour rien, puisqu'ils ont continué à m'envoyer tout autant de travail. On m'a demandé de renvoyer le glossaire à plusieurs reprises, je peux supposer qu'ils n'ont pas su l'archiver pour que tout le monde y ait facilement accès, ou ils ont oublié où ils l'ont rangé, en tout cas ils ne se sont pas servi de mon glossaire comme ils en avaient l'intention.
TLDR: Pourquoi donner à votre client le moyen de se débarrasser de vous à la faveur d'autres traducteurs moins cher? Cela peut être utile pour vous les traducteurs d'avoir un glossaire, et je recommande vivement d'en faire au fur et à mesure. Le proposer à son client alors qu'il n'en a pas exprimé le souhait me semble contre-productif. ▲ Collapse
