Hi!

I will meet a potential client soon to discuss his book. He want to translate it from Arabic into English. The priblem is that I have no idea on how to calculate the rate.

I need some help on the book rate. It belong to anthropology and psychology (General).

Book translation rate Dec 1, 2017

Hi Hassan,

I just looked in the Writer's Market 2016 edition - and I doubt it has changed much in the last year - for a nonfiction book translation, the low end is .05 c per target word and on the high end .30 per target word. The average is .12. Personally, I would charge around .17, but it depends on language combination and experience as well.

Hopefully that helps!

Michèle

Thanks!

It is a paper copy; I don't think they have an e-copy. I only know the No. of pages (around 180 p.)

If you cannot perform a word count, it might be a good idea to select about 10-15 random pages throughout the book, count the words and calculate an average word count per page. Then you can estimate the total number of words using this average value.

Thank you so much. That sound a great idea. It would give me an idea about the total word count. Thank you again.

Something that needs to be said Dec 1, 2017

It's a delicate subject, but does your potential client know you're not a native English speaker? Maybe you're anticipating having the translation proofread before delivery (and incorporating that in your rate), or your client is expecting to pay extra for that step? That would be fine, but skipping that step would not be fine at all, that much is clear already.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this important point. Indeed, my client knows I am not an English native speaker.
