Recently, I have received a few files in .docx format and was unable to open them. What are they? What do I need to do to open them?
Are they created by "new and improved" MS Word? I have MS Office 2003 and I have been perfectly happy with it until now. Is it a trick by the software industry to force me to upgrade while I am happy with what I have?
Is there something I can ask the senders of these file to do so I could open them?
Your help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
As the question has been already answered extensively to you, here I will give you one something different from a technical point of view: Most of such formats (docx (word), pxf (transit), etc.) are only compressed files formats of xml or of text files.
Do a safety copy of these files, change the extension to .zip and open them with winzip or winrar. Lets you surprise. I do it all the time with all the files with rare extensions that fall down in my hands...

I don't like the Word 2007 version and use 2003 on both computers. The only thing I have to do is to delete te .x of .docx and Word 2003 opens them normally. As long as the x stays there, they won't open.
Don't remember if I downloaded a patch something for that, but maybe I did.

Otherwise Word will not be able to handle the ZIP-container.

Discovery of today (Office 2007) | Oct 26, 2009 |
Hello everybody!
Just two hours ago I discovered a new problem in using Office 2007.
A client of mine received my file, opened and read it (because I saved it as Word '97-2003), but there's a difference of pages!!!
I mean: I had to provide a file amounting to a certain number of pages (in a specific "cage" he gave me).

Now, on my PC I see a right amount of pages... but when it appears on his PC it has 6 pages more!!!
And my case is "happy", I only had to cut a few lines here and there...
A colleague of mine, same client and same kind of text and format etc, had a discrepancy of 30 pages!!!
At a first sight, the files are identical (also as KB and so on...)...
So, you can convert these files, but the result could NOT be the same...

Isn't he using a special template to open those files? | | | He opened it with the standard word application | Oct 26, 2009 |
But what hit me is that the result is different in each different PC we tried (we tried with some people in his office and each time the result is different...).
In that office they have only Word 2000, but just out of curiosity I sent it to my other home PC too, where I have another version (I can't say which, now, but it's more... updated) and the result is another...

No two files are identical!!!
Also with the previous Office I used there were some differences ('cause it is used as a "publishing " format while it wasn't created to do that) but those differences were very small, some lines, not more...
Now you could think you've finished the work while it has to be edit again... and very heavily!

Any Word opens in the format you have set with the default settings of your printer driver. The most common causes of text-flow discrepancies are the conversion from A4 to Letter and vv. or the printig area limit. The reason is the fact that MS Word is only a verry performant typewriter. It manages a text-flow, but not pages.
I already noticed this from the good old Office 1997 (the most friendly and operational of all)
check it

Is there a commonly available word processor that doesn't do it?
