Word does not let me copy whole columns

In Word 2002 I encounter the problem, that Word will not let me copy a column from one doc into another or even one column from left to the same table at the right of the same doc.
Also OO Writer will not obey.
I can copy those columns into new documents, but not into the files the client sent me.
I translated the files in Eageditor 2007 and the client would like to have the translation right beneath the source column.

Have you tried saving the file in .rtf? I remember having had this problem occasionally, and that helped.
