word count for bilingual .ppt file Thread poster: Shawn Champion

Hi,
I have: XP, Trados Studio, Office 2003, Office 2007
Is there a way to get separate word counts for each language in the file? If so, I suspect it would have to rely on some sort of "auto detect language" and it would thus be less than 100% accurate. I just can't find a way to do this besides manually copying out all of the text of 1 language, etc.

I find that PPT and some other programs can be problematic in terms of word content, as often there may be text boxes that for some reason are not detected, as well as other issues. I therefore have a real-time hourly rate which I apply for non-Word formats like PPT, Excel, Pagemaker, Dreamweaver... etc. | | | Viachaslau Sweden Local time: 06:55 English to Russian + ...

As long as there is no text embedded in a graphic object the number of words in a ppt file can be seen in file's properies - right click/ properties/ information.
I don't think. however, that there is an easy and accurate way of counting words of different languages in the same file.
But is this really needed. I know that translators working in multiple language pairs charge different rates for different languages. How many cents the differents can be? max 2? | | | Tony M France Local time: 06:55 Member French to English + ... SITE LOCALIZER Possible explanation | Feb 26, 2011 |

I imagine Yankee Swede may well be facing the same problem as I often do, i.e. being required to translate a PPT that is already partly in EN, and the client only wishing to pay for those parts I've actually had to translate.
So it's not probably a question of the small difference between the rates for 2 different langages, so much as the whole charging basis for the project.
Just an idea: if the languages of each segment were correctly set from the outset, would it be possible to extract the text to Word (using Werecat, for example), and then simply delete one or other of the languages using search-&-replace on the 'language' attribute?
Although a little convoluted, this would certainly involve less operations than doing it wholly manually — but does depend, of course, on the language attributes having been set correctly in the first place!
Good luck!

@ Tony M - exactly. Sorry if my original post was less than crystal. The file was about 30% English and 70% Swedish. I was only to be paid for the translations to English. It wasn't a huuuuuuuge file, so the PM and I did manual word counts that were almost exactly the same. Thanks for the Werecat tip!
I ran everything through Trados before accepting the job and it was flawless. I just forgot about the wordcount part (facepalm) | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » word count for bilingual .ppt file Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
