I have a problem, the Track Changes feature will not start working, I have tried Control Shift E and also through the tool bar. When activated, nothing happens. I have accessed some sites and they say something about the text being saved in Compatibility mode or something. What does that mean? How can I enable the feature and switch it off afterwards? I use Word 2007 and the text has a doc extension. Please help.

PAUL

Can't see why not! Apr 15, 2011

I have 2007 too. The only thing Compatibility mode prevent the Track Changes from doing is indicating "moves".

Check if the "Show markup" - "Insertions and deletions" option (on the right side of the "Balloon" button) is... checked - and the other option as well.

While you're at it, check the "Track Change options" (by clicking the tiny little triangle on the button).

Did you try simply closing Word and reopening it? It usually solve any work-don't work-anymore problem (especially if you have been working on a huge document). If not, turn off the puter and restart.

New situation Apr 15, 2011

Now some of them are actually being made but they are not being highlighted, which makes it very difficult for me as the client (a fellow translator who is travelling abroad to give a presentation on translation) has specifically asked me to show the changes. As the job is urgent, I am having to write the text and cross it out (I can't underline text here otherwise I would give an example), which of course takes twice as long.

If anybody has any additional ideas, please send them in

If anybody has any additional ideas, please send them in. It is a document I have just received and is about 5 pages long. The document has no changes shown, I have to proofread the text and show the changes I have made.

Earlier version Apr 15, 2011

The document you are working on may be in an earlier version of Word. Try saving it first as a Word 1997-2003 document (it is then 'in compatibility mode') and close it. Then open it again and go into the toolbar to make sure the colours are set the way you want them.

Suggestions Apr 15, 2011

A few positive suggestions:

Have you saved the file properly? Maybe it's opened in read-only mode, hence your inability to make changes?

To get round compatability problems, you could try renaming the doc as .docx and see what happens (save a backup copy first).

One negative suggestion:

If I'd sent you the doc to review, and I received back a doc that *looked* as though it had Track Changes in it, but in fact had lots of crossings-out (I guess

One negative suggestion:

If I'd sent you the doc to review, and I received back a doc that *looked* as though it had Track Changes in it, but in fact had lots of crossings-out (I guess you're using strikethrough) I'd be none too pleased, as it misses the point of Track Changes, which is that the recipient can flip through from change to change and rapidly accept or decline the changes. If this is your strategy, I'd say that's probably worse than doing nothing and that you need to speak to your client first.

Try a "compare" Apr 15, 2011

Do your revisions as if you were not asked to use the track change. "Save as" the document. Then, run a "Compare" of the original and the new version and check if, this time, everything is ok.

Did you try using the "Balloons" mode?
