We use Trados for counting, and that works even better than most of these counting tools as it counts the number of words that need translation, as opposed to all "words according to Microsoft Word".
It is perfectly capable of counting words in text boxes (I recommend activating the "XML Workflow for Word .doc files" and using TagEditor for most Word files.)

I have been following this thread with great interest, and installed Heike's macro.
It does not seem to work correctly.
In an operating manual with countless textboxes, Heike's macro finds 4812 words (47 more than the regular function in Word).
The Shaunakelly macro finds 4765 (the same as the Word function) plus 3236 in textboxes, which is far closer to the truth.
BTW:
The wordcount function (I use Word 2000) counts numbers as words.

After some more experimenting, I have just discovered that many of the textboxes in my manual are grouped. Apparently, Heike's macro cannot count the words in grouped boxes. After ungrouping them, the wordcounts are much closer.

This is also my preferred one, an excellent tool. I actually have recommended it to my customers, and since it's from a third party (and not a Word macro written by myself) and free there is no dispute about word counts....

Yes, but it has problems with "grouped" text boxes, as I found out to my dismay after making a firm offer for a translation that had lots of those...

Not any more. That was fixed with the introduction of the XML Workflow for Word files in Version 7.1 (i.e. two versions ago).

Why don't you just use Werecat as suggested by John? It comes as a Word template that you add using Tools > Templates and Addins menu > Add button (or better still, put it in Word's startup directory). You then only have to click on the blue claw button to extract text from, and return text to, the text boxes.

A lot of pdf creators do not support 64-bit OS. Month ago I have discovered Free PDF Writer in the net. It works perfectly on my 64-bit XP.

Could someone please save me from this madness? I am almost at the point of yelling at clients who innocently use text boxes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! And can anyone warn me about Wordfast related text-box issues?

Create a text box and type in 2 words
Type some text outside of the box.
Now go to the top of the page and "select all"
You'll notice that it just selects the text outside of the boxes as you said, and you'll get the wrong count.
Now try again, only this time, DON'T select all. Just click Word Count (make sure the "include text boxes" item is checked, of course.)

Just a thought: the above-named software gets one out of a lot of fixes. Open TagEditor, which should be configured to open Trados Workbench, then use "File>Open" and in the box that opens, access the directory containing the "dirty" file, which select, and click on "Open".

In Workbench, from the "Tools" menu, select "Analyse" and find the TTX version of the file. In addition to all the fuzzy matches, this should give you a wordcount taking text boxes into account. Even if the aggregate wordcount in Trados is not identical to Word, it gives a ball park figure for charging. And in any case, if you are given dirty files to work with, you should be charging some sort of premium, which usually the Trados Workbench wordcount will yield.
