How to count words in Power Point Thread poster: glamoclija
| glamoclija Local time: 03:24 Italian to Serbian + ...
I need help in counting the words in Power Point. I was thinking that if I open File - Properties -Statistics, I would see the correct number of words in selected text, but instead I see ridiculously small amount of words. What should I do? Have any idea?
Thank you.

I don't charge per word for jobs in Powerpoint or other time-consuming formats. My per-word rates apply only to Word or compatible documents, and for other formats I apply a "real time" hourly rate. My clients usually accept this when I explain that, for example, 2000 words in a Powerpoint doc can take 4 or 5 times as long to translate as 2000 words in Word.
Perhaps I am lucky to have such understanding clients! | | | DGK T-I United Kingdom Local time: 09:24 Georgian to English + ...

No, not lucky, it is good advice.

You can try Powerpoint2doc | Oct 11, 2007 |
This program, freely available at http://ginstrom.com/software/powerpoint2doc/ converts PowerPoint files to Word, so you can count the words in Word.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,

I went to http://ginstrom.com/software/powerpoint2doc/ to download this program, but nothing happened after installation. I didn't see any buttons on Power Point that would transfer presentation to Word for counting. Did I miss something?

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that you must have Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 or higher and Microsoft Word 2000 or higher.
If you do, once you install PowerPoint2Doc, open PowerPoint and you'll see a button that reads "Export to Word".
Open the PowerPoint file whose words you want to count, click this "Export to Word" button and there you go.

My pleasure. I learnt about this tool just two days ago in a mailing list.

Hi Natasa and all,
Why don't you just download a demo version of Trados?! It counts pretty much everything, and is versatile because it can exclude the speaker's notes.
The only thing to watch out for is embedded excel sheets with text, which Trados has a problem with.
Then again, I believe that most other counters would also stumble on embedded documents like that.

Hi everyone,
After reading all your answers and seeing that many of you found the way of making PowerPoint2doc program work, I started to investigate more why I had a problem with it and have seen that I should insert the icon myself by going again to Tools-Customize, where I finally found the icon for Word (I do not know why I had problem finding this icon there before). But I would like also to mention, that the next day after installation of PowerPoint2doc program, I could not open Power Point at all. To my horror, it was frosen. I tried couple times to restart the computer and finally PP started to work. I guess that this new installed program caused the problem with Power Point. I am glad that this is fixed now too.
Thank you all for your answers. ▲ Collapse | | |
Another freeware alternative is Werecat:

After translation you send the text back to the original file (PowerPoint or Word)."
