Holá,
sorry I have to use English.
Does anyone remember how much the peseta was worth 1979 in relation to DM or USD? I'm curious how much the 20 million peseta really was Antonio Alcántara put to his bank account.
Gracias!

In 1979, a Deutsche Mark was worth roughly 40 pesetas, which means 20 million pesetas would have been about 500,000 DM.

I don't know how much that would be in 2013 euros or dollars.

I didn't know they showed Cuentame abroad Feb 16, 2013

I am amazed they show Cuentame abroad, I didn't know.

Anyway, according to the Spanish Institute of Statistics (INE) 20 million pesetas from 1979 (which would have been about 120,202€) would equal roughly 743,088€ today. INE calculator

This won't be entirely accurate as it is only based on rate of inflation and there are other factors to consider, but it gives

This won't be entirely accurate as it is only based on rate of inflation and there are other factors to consider, but it gives you a close enough idea.

In 1979, $1.00 was worth 74 pesetas. Feb 16, 2013

It was during the Carter Presidency, and the dollar had sunk to a very low 74 pesetas! The reason I know is because I had to exchange dollars for pesetas that year and a relative mentioned how when she was my age the dollar was worth 900 pesetas!

Thanks, folks! Feb 16, 2013

So it was about the amount one could win in German Lotto in those days, half a million DM.
Yes, Cuentame every Monday, we just saw no. 209.

Well, maybe this is a bit exaggeraged. It would depend on the town and the part of town, but I have known of many working class small-to-medium flats of that time that were bought for 200,000 pesetas. My mother owns a slightly larger one, and although she bought it much later at a much higher price, it probably cost some 300,000 pesetas when it was built originally around the end of the 70's.
