Hello all,
I want to get my German up to scratch, and evening classes over the past two years have helped a bit but I really need to go to Germany for a while and do an intensive course. Has anyone attended the Goethe-Institut's one- or two-month intensive residential courses? What were your experiences?

I test at B2 on the Council of Europe Language Levels - a result of learning at school and at university-level classes over the last two years.

I had a great experience with the Goethe institute, I did a one month intensive summer course in 1998, in the little town of Murnau (south of Munich, near Garmisch Partenkirchen area).

Everything was well organized, the teachers were professional, the level of instruction was what I expected (intensive!)

I don't recall exactly, but I must have been in the intermediate level class ? I still have my notes and books somewhere ...

Actually one month was too short, I didn't get to the level of proficiency that I was hoping for, probably because I was speaking French with my husband outside of the classroom! Best is to find a boarding room/living situation with Germans, so that you can continue learning outside of the classroom, and if you can afford it - do the 2 month course, followed by some vacation on your own perhaps?

Another thing about Murnau is that it rains A LOT in summer (every day when I was there) and the German spoken by the natives there is a little different than the German we were learning in class. ▲ Collapse

Fantastic experience Nov 26, 2007

My experience goes back as far as 1993 but I hope I can help you by sharing it.
I did the 2-month course in Freiburg (Schwarzwald) and I really enjoyed it. The lecturer was great. The curriculum was extensive. They also organized several trips around the region for us.
I stayed at the Institute's dormitory. Met fanstastic friends from all over the world. Go for it if you can. You won't regret it.
