This is a popular term for any strange episode. Parents will complain that their child has had a “funny turn”, and after a full history, examination and special investigations this may turn out to be some sort of epilepsy, or a faint, or a panic attack, or a pseudo-seizure, or something else.

Real life story: heart bypass - not just a "funny turn"
However, in January 2004 I had a funny turn while out in the car. After about 20 minutes I felt well enough to drive home, where I rested for the rest of the day. Two weeks later I had another turn and again on recovering I rested. A week later I had another turn and this time it was not pleasant. After making an appointment with my doctor I was advised to see a cardiologist who put me into hospital for an angiogram.

These non-specific episodes can be caused by drops in blood pressure, stress, minor strokes, heart problems, migraine, certain types of epilepsy, and several other causes. Мне кажется, что так будет ближе всего к стилю оригинала. Я имею в виду то, что это "...распространенное/популярное/известное выражение/название для любого странного/необычного происшествия/случая...."
Поскольку речь идет о детях, то для них жалобы на нездоровье или плохое самочувствие являются редкостью и непривычным для родителей явлением.

В связи с этим, если .....родители говорят, что у ребенка был приступ...., то непременно добавят какой (приступ болей, рвоты, головокружения,пр.пр). Слово "припадок" в русском языке обычно используют при описании судорог или сильного двигательного возбуждения ( народное: припадочный).
Кроме того, трудно представить себе, чтобы эта характеристика ЛЮБОГО необычного эпизода была бы настолько "популярной", из уст родителей "приступ/припадок" не так часто можно услышать. По отношению к ребенку - это очень серьезное заявление, расхожим его назвать трудно.
