The previously mentioned lack of colormetrical evaluations as well as the rise of modern and inexpensive digital printers, such as inkjet photo printers, lead to widespread use of overly colourful prints sent to the printer as the reference for the OK-sheet. The printer often failed to reach the required appearance; reclamation and rework have been the consequences.

Though the question arose of how a digital print might be assessed on an objective basis in order to be a [technical realisable] colour reference for a given printing condition using a reasonable control element to be imposed on each document. Ein farbverbindlicher Proof soll das Druckergebnis hinsichtlich Farbigkeit nahezu voraussagen. Wann ein solcher Proof farbverbindlich ist, regeln der Medienstandard Druck und die ISO 12647-7. Neben einem Halbton-Proof, bei dem Rasterverfahren zum Einsatz kommen, wie sie vom Hersteller des Druckertreibers zur Verfügung gestellt werden, können auch Raster-Proofs erzeugt werden, die das später im Druck verwendete Raster simulieren (Offset-Rosette). Heute werden zur Erstellung von Proofs fast ausschließlich Tintenstrahldrucker eingesetzt, die über RIPs mit eingebautem Farbmanagementsystem angesteuert werden. Damit ein Kontrakt Proof farbverbindlich und rechtsverbindlich als Grundlage für den Fortdruck anerkannt wird, ist der Aufdruck eines UGRA/Fogra Medienkeiles erforderlich. Die normierten Werte des Medienkeiles werden auf dem Proof vermessen. Wenn die Abweichungen innerhalb der vorgegebenen Grenzen der ISO Norm liegen, wird ein Prüfprotokoll aufgedruckt oder aufgeklebt, das die Genauigkeit des Proofs innerhalb der Toleranzen dokumentiert. Mit diesem Prüfprotokoll wird ein Kontrakt Proof farb- und rechtsverbindlich.

Kommentar True color ist die Bezeichnung für die Verwendung von 8 Bits pro Farbkanal (24 bit insgesamt) in der Bilddarstellung. Dies ist von der Farbtreue (fast) völlig unabhängig.
Farbtreue (colo(u)r fidelity) steht im Zusammenhang mit der Kalibrierung eines Monitors, d.h. daß die Farben, die ein Monitor ausgibt auch z.B. einem Ausdruck in Farbe entsprechen. Einfach gesagt, Farbtreue bedeutet, daß das, was reinkommt (Digitalfoto etc.) auch hinten wieder rauskommen soll (Ausdruck auf einer bestimmten Papiersorte, Color proofing).
