It just came back to me!
'barring' in this sense is 'virage'; as for 'rod', depends a bit on the size / scale of the thing, but I'd have thought it would be a bit heavier than that, more like a 'bar' (but you can see why they wouldn't have wanted to say 'barring bar'!), and I believe this term is commonly used in FR.
