ormiston May 22, 2016:
Jocelyne Cuenin May 22, 2016:
Thanks, Tony.
Tony M May 22, 2016:
@ Petitavoine That's exactly the problem here! 'talking over' and 'cutting people off' are VERY close synonyms, the idea of 'talking over' perhaps more implying the notion of 'shutting someone up by talking louder than them' (overlapping), where 'cutting them off' doesn't imply anything about the loudness, but rather suggests things like jumping in when they pause for breath!
So however it is actually translated, IMHO it needs to include this idea of ignoring what someone is saying and expressing forcefully what THEY want to say instead.
Jocelyne Cuenin May 22, 2016:
( Cutting people off and talking over them has become the new norm in our demanding, impatient, instant gratification world. - See more at: http://conniedieken.com/influence-blog/how-to-communicate-wi...
Tony M May 22, 2016:
@ Ormiston Yes, it's exactly that!
ormiston May 22, 2016:
it's more the idea of les gens coupent la parole aux autres, sans les écouter
Tony M May 22, 2016:
GLOSSARY Please try a term search, we've had something very similar to this before, so there should already be an entry in the glossary, which would I feel sure be helpful to you here.

disagree Tony M : The implication of 'over each other' in the source text is more about one person trying to top another (cf. 'talk each other down'), rather than this idea 'all speaking at the same time' / I'll go as far as saying this is an inaccurate rendering of s/t.

They talk over each other- tous en même temps, ils ne laissent pas l'autre parler (si possible!), et celui qui écoute ne peut rien saisir...

agree Tony M : Very much in line with ormiston's suggestion in the discussion — though I do like the addition of 'couper la parole'. You both seem to have understood all the subtlety of the source text correctly.

thanks, Tony!
neutral ormiston : my issue with 'sans s'écouter' is that it sounds ominously like 'without listening to what they themselves are saying ' which is ironucally the opposte as those interrupters ONLY listen to theselves and ignore anything anyone else might be trying to say!

Obviously sans écouter LES AUTRES. Goes without saying.

Peer comment(s):

agree Odile Raymond : "Over" implique l'idée d'une surenchère.
