Developmental surveillance

UNIVERSAL SURVEILLANCE

It is usual to examine an infant in the first 24 h of life to look for any obvious structural abnormalities or features that may indicate congenital problems. Some of these will have developmental consequences. For the majority of newborn infants no abnormality is found.

TARGETED SURVEILLANCE

Infants with known illnesses with developmental consequences are required to have developmental follow-up in order that early intervention with therapy, support and teaching can be initiated if developmental problems occur, for example post hydrocephalus or a known chromosomal abnormality.
