Sorry for any inconveniences! I wouldn't annoy you and not ask you to enter my proposal. But we all have doubts on the source term. That's why I added Wiipedia articles to help you in this matter. I think that the cited Wikipedia sources are reliable, which clearly distinguish between software and hardware errors.

I will also close this discussion. It's only a pity that this problem could not been solved.

What precision is measured? How is it done?
What is positioned? How is this test conducted?

Acc to the answer, the term can be used correctly, or wrongly. If wrongly, the next question is raised, what would be the correct term. Only if this is clear, we can translate the term correctly. Otherwise we should notify the client that the translation is not sure. I would make a note in the footer, explaining the reason and possible translations.

In regard to the glossary it is advised to enter correct equivalent terms in order not to confuse any peer in future, who is looking for an appropriate translation and to maintain consistency.

The variation coefficient is a measure for distribution variances. It has no dimension and is applied to all possible measurements. It camera may locate the position of devices and the program can calculate the deviations from the right position and the variances and dispersion. But this has nothing to do with any 'burning-in'. So, this term may be used wrongly. Please inform you client and ask for the correct term.

In any case, burning-in is that, what I described and merits a corresponding entry into the glossary.

So this test consists in the control of subcomponents, ie the camera, in particular their position.
Nothing to do with temperature as it works without heating,
CV is coefficient of variation.

But can you us inform, what "CV" means. I suppose it is a property of the tested device or derived from measurements.

Since we talk about a device that is supposed to capture images of chromatograms, I would rule out the concept of "getting hold" here.
Form the rest of the text I cannot get more indo about this test which just appears to be a "check up" that "all works fine", in particular the camera that captures the image.
There's no need to test temperature either; the working range 15-30°C

OTOH the point of a "burn-in" is not only to check if everything is working as planned, but mainly to push to the limits - to keep it working for hours or even days (hopefully without failing) - which doesn't seem to be the case in this ST. Agree with Tony that the term "burn-in" might have been wrongly used.

@ Asker Even if that is sometimes the case, having worked a great deal on medical electronics devices, I can assure you this is a standard technical term that applies across all fields.

It sounds to me as if your source text writer simply used the term wrongly; but the only way you can be sure is to ask the customer.

Traditionally, almost ALL equipment, certainly in critical fields like medical, will have been subjected to individual burn-in testing, instead of just random sampling testing as is commonly used for consumer electronics.

I feel pretty sure what the writer was really trying to say was that during the burn-in period, comprehensive operational checks would also be performed; or conversele,y the time taken to perform these routine checks would consitute a sort of burn-in period. However, in the source text extract given, we have no confirmation of this either way — though perhaps your wider context may help?

@Tony I'm not sure it is necessary to move this question in the "Tech/Eng" category because often the technical wording for medical devices is not that of Tech/Eng.

Indeed, here the test has nothing to do with "vieillissement" of the device, but as explained in the second sentence seems to be a "standard check of all functions".
That's why I'm wondering about déverminage which is "high tech" but that I never found on medical device.

@ Asker Sounds like it certainly should be; however, I have one slight reservation, in that they go on to describe what is involved in the test (a fairly normal list of production tests) BUT don't actually mention about the length of time, which is usually what is crucial for a burn-in test: you normally want to run the equipment long enough to have a fair chance of catching any incipient faults.

It may just be poorly-worded in EN; or it is possible they are simply using the term 'burn-in' incorrectly!

Burn-in testing is intended to run the equiment, usually under normal conditions, for a certain length of time (the longer the better, to some extent!) in order to reveal any latent defects that might show up early on in its service life.

As both Daryo and myself have already said, this doesn't seem entirely consistent with what your source text is describing — it may just be that the s/t is skimming over that particular point or, as we have suggested, it is not inconceivable that the s/t writer simply used the term wrongly.

neutral Johannes Gleim : "déverminage" or "débogage" is applicable for software errors. Burning-in of hardware is made either at ambient or elevated temperatures. I wouldn't translate hardware terms (running-in, rodage) by software terms (debugging, débogage/déverminage)

No-one except you mentioned 'débogage'; 'déverminage' predates software by a long way; and contrary to popular received wisdom, 'bunring in' does NOT (necessarily) involve elevated temperatures. Testing here seems functional, not just H/ or S/ware

"burn-in tests" are very usually in all technical domains. Normally elevated temperatures are used to accelerate ageing of the device under testing. The engineers registers all faults occurred during the ageing time. Ageing temperature and time are stipulated in the relevant standards, e.g. +40 °C above upper use limit for 1000 h for devices or temperatures taken from corresponding tables for determination of assigned temperature limits for plastic materials simulating 40.000 h lifetime (typical for UL).

Before they are delivered, all Lynx PCs are subjected to a documented, 8-hour burn-in test.

We should distinguish between hardware errors and software errors. Both sections uses different terminology and methods to eliminate failures:

Burn-in is the process by which components of a system are exercised prior to being placed in service (and often, prior to the system being completely assembled from those components). This testing process will force certain failures to occur under supervised conditions so an understanding of load capacity of the product can be understood.[1]
The intention is to detect those particular components that would fail as a result of the initial, high-failure rate portion of the bathtub curve of component reliability. If the burn-in period is made sufficiently long (and, perhaps, artificially stressful), the system can then be trusted to be mostly free of further early failures once the burn-in process is complete.

neutral Tony M : 'burn-in testing' isn't really the same as 'aging testing', though there is to some extent a degree of crossover. Strictly speaking, that's a misuse of the EN term 'aging', except in certain very restricted contexts.

burning-in tests are not always conducted at elevated temperatures. I have often seen such testing at ambiance temperatures, e.g. computers running to detect early memory failures prior to delivery. This is also ageing.
