In prosthetic dental treatment, vertical splitting of core is what happens in "post and core" work if there is a failure/fault in design of pieces.Or so I'm told!

Just a suggestion, as I've never heard this term before. I do know that the use of some posts can cause vertical root fractures—but that is probably not what is meant here.
