English term

indexing gear

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) indexing gear

The lathe indexing gear is used to space out the desired number of flutes and to prevent the work from turning while the router travels along its length. A stop block at each end of the wooden bed limits the travel of the router, making all flutes identical in length.

@Ana Response to your request under your answer:

The ST refers to the cutting of flutes (longitudinal grooves) on a cylindrical workpiece. The flutes are cut with a router while the workpiece is held stationary in a lathe. While the cutting is in progress, only the router is in motion.

The “indexing gears” of the lathe are used only to turn the workpiece into the correct position for cutting each flute. If there are 12 flutes, for example, the indexing gears will be set up to turn the workpiece by exactly 30º between each flute-cutting operation.

I have mentioned that it is “bad practice” to use the indexing gears to "prevent the work from turning". That’s because the indexing gears are precision components designed only to establish the correct angular position of the workpiece; something more robust should be used to block the workpiece (prevent it turning on the lathe) while routing is in progress.

agree Jennifer Levey : Yes, the translation must include a reference to "indexado", which is the method used to divide a circumference into 'n' equal sectors. But I strongly disagree with the ST assertion that the indexing gear should be used to "prevent the work from turning"

engranaje guía

Hola,

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : You haven't understood the mechanics here (or the improper use of the "indexing gear" to "prevent the work from turning".//Pse see note in discussion box.
