From my power plant contract again:
L’évacuation de l’énergie produite par chaque unité de production se fait par un transformateur principal relié directement à un **avant-poste** blindé qui assure l’interface entre la centrale et les lignes haute-tension liaisons 400 kV).
I'm tempted to just call it a sub-station, but thought I'd better check whether anyone had come across a more specific term.

I don't know if there are any subtle differences, but the substation right at the power generating facility is often called a switchyard, substations down the line being at junctions, at towns, etc. This might be a way to differentiate "poste" and "avant-poste" ...
