smart waste bin

That might not be the preferred English term, if the same concept exists. The hits for "smart waste bins" concerned things that opened as your approached, or identified your empty bean cans.

So while my confidence is MEDIUM for the English term, it is HIGH for what the thing actually is.

The conteneur à puces is described at

http://www.fernelmont.be/SiteFernelmont/Site.nsf/9580caedbbc...

Basically, it is a means of providing a "user pays" service to waste generators, i.e. you and me. Instead of charging every household the same amount for refuse disposal, irrespective of the weight of the waste removed in a year, the on-board chip identifies your own personal rubbish bin and the truck that empties it tracks its ID, the number of times it is emptied per year, and the total weight emptied, and you are charged accordingly.

Still can\'t find a short term for it.

he Answer Technology data logging and transferral system has been custom designed as a full \"TURN KEY\" system for the domestic waste retrieval industry for the purpose of:-
• Keeping track of rubbish bins in and out of service.
• Charging per bin pick up.
• Paying drivers pro rata rates.
• Accurately monitoring pick up times and dates.
• Locating lost or missing bins.
• Driver\'s \"run\" reports.
• All aspects of waste bin control and management.
• Etc, etc, etc.
The Answer Technology waste bin tagging management system works by way of a small (25mm X 4.5mm) passive transponder tag implanted into the bin at time of manufacture. Of coarse this tag can be retro fitted if need be. When a bin is picked up by the truck the serial number of the tag is read, along with the time and date, into a small data logger computer in the cabin of the truck. If a bin is picked up with no tag, an alarm will sound and a serial number of 000000 will be stored. When the truck returns to the depot all the data is automatically transferred to the data base computer via a inbuilt radio link. At this point reports will be printed and the data base system will be up-dated............ RFID tag. model ID-200

ON BOARD WASTE WEIGHING SYSTEMS
Wheeled dustbins are equipped with a microchip with a unique identification number that enables information about it, including the owner\'s identity, address and their record of volumes collected to be brought up on a display in the collection vehicle when the bin is connected to the hoist. The chip is not affected by wet or dirty conditions, and it can be installed to existing and new equipment and computer networks. Indeed, since 1996 all European manufacturers have designed their wheeled bin containers to take this chip. To date, up to half a million chips have already been fitted or are currently being installed in the UK.
The process of reading individual chips is completely automatic, meaning no operator input is needed. The bin is weighed as it is lifted with the waste and then on the descent without waste so that the net waste weight is registered.
The vehicle stores the information and, after the collection round, it sends the information to a central computer. The central computer is able to analyse the gathered data and send individual invoices, weekly, monthly or quarterly, to the customer, who then pays according to the waste collected. This service is usually contracted out.

One should always refuse new technology such as this. The next step, used in conjunction with GPS, will impose fines on the owners of any bins that are not removed from the street within X minutes of being emptied by the truck, or are put out X minutes before the scheduled passage of the refuse truck ... Wanna bet? Just think of all the little old ladies, physically handicapped, mothers with prams, etc. who are inconvenienced by bins left longer than necessary on the streets.

agree Charlie Bavington : 1. This is new stuff, why can't it be you that invents the term for it?! 2. Last week, there was a story on the news here (London) about a woman who copped a fine for taking her bin out 3 days early. It's already happening!!

I'll vote for that! See suggestions above!
agree David Goward : We had a bin like this where we used to live 3 years ago. You paid a fee depending on the number of people in the household, plus a fee per collection. Our bill almost doubled as a result. We moved out.

OK.....these are waste bins with ELECTRONIC tags,...as in this explanation:

We offer the entire package from the passive transponder tag located on the rubbish bin, the scanner antenna system, the data loggers with the radio transceiver units, all the way to the user data base computer/s with the data base software assembled for correct operation. The system that we offer has been designed specifically for the purpose of domestic waste retrieval. It is not a logging system designed as a general purpose unit or with some other intention in mind, and because of this the unit is very reliable and user friendly for the industry for which it has been designed. The Answer Technology system is currently in use at Garretts waste management in Bayswater for the servicing of Ringwood City Council, City of Casey, and the City of Wagga Wagga. These systems use 90000 tags and 12 trucks. We have also installed a 43000 tag system with 7 trucks at JJ Richard\'s in Dandenong for the service of Dandenong City Council. The Garretts system has been successfully in service now for two years, and in that time has proven its reliability. The PC software is a specific package that has been custom designed for the very purpose of control, historical data, and typical waste bin management information. This gives the user the ability to keep accurate records for:-

When a bin was delivered.
When it was last picked up (Date, hour, minute, second)
How many times the bin has been picked up so far this year.
What the street address is.
What size the bin is.
What the bin transponder tag number is.
What the bin serial number is.
Whether or not the bin is in service or in depot yard.
If the bin has turned up in the system if previously lost.
Total number of bins picked.
Number of bad or incorrectly scanned bins.
Start and finish time for the pick up run. (Date, hour, minute, second)
Truck number and or driver name for that run.
A hard copy report of each run showing number of pickups, truck number, driver name, duplicate bins, lost bins, bad scans, etc.
16 weeks history of every data file

FINAL: waste [trash] bin with smart tag

Electronic inventory system for stacked containers
Guthrie, Warren E.
Northrop Grumman Corporation
A device which locates a container from a group of containers utilizing an electronic tag, the electronic tag is capable of being positioned in close proximity to one of the containers. The electronic tag includes at least one long range transceiver portion and at least one short range transceiver portion. Each long range transceiver portion is capable of communicating with either a short range transceiver portion associated with another electronic tag, or an interrogator unit. Each short range transceiver portion is capable of communicating with a long range transceiver portion of another ****electronic tag***. The device assists in locating a container, relative to other containers, when the containers are stored in a stacked or nested configuration. A global positioning system (GPS) can be utilized to locate the position of the containers on the Earth\'s surface.

agree Dr Sue Levy (X) : I would say "bin" rather than "container". Here is a Belgian site talking about conteneurs à puces for household waste collection: http://users.swing.be/poncelet2000/programme/pro2e.htm so I presume they mean the big plastic bins on wheels

..well..yes..but it may be more "industrial" right?
