French term

plaquette

French to English Social Sciences Geology
I am translating a text relating to a surface study on African mountains to asses the economic feasibility of prospecting for iron. This word appears quite a lot and I'm not quite sure of the most approriate translation in a geological/mining context, e.g.

"Les affleurements sont relativement rares et le minerai se présente la plupart de temps sous forme de plaquettes mêlées à la terre."

Any help greatly appreciated.

There ARE a few valid hits (not video games) for "iron ore nuggets", "haematite nuggets", "limonite nuggets". Google "minerai + fer + plaquette" and you'll find a Belgian site with pictures of "plaquettes" of limonite (an iron ore) measuring several centimetres across.

bar

Iron-ore is most plentiful in irregularly shaped grains, and bars not exceeding 0.2 mm. in length.

Plaquette: Petit bas-relief rectangulaire ou polygonal frappé ou fondu en métal, comme une médaille.

Putting 2 and 2 together?

Apparently 'plaquette' also means a tiny tectonic plate as well but this doesn't fix your context at all!
