: Absolutely. "First Nations" is the accepted term in Canada and reflects the fact that there were scores of aboriginal "nations" with distinct languages, territories and cultures.

either "native" or "indigenous" would work in this context.

you can also say native or indigenous peoples (people usually doensn't have an "s" on the end of it but in this context it would be an accepted exception--I have definitely heard it used in this way).

: (just a note: "peoples" is no exception but the regular plural of the singular "people" - not to be confused with the plural "people" that is the plural of "person"

you are absolutely right. I wasn't familiar enough with this term to comment authoritatively, probably because I don't work in the sociology field.
