Urgent: normalgängiges Ventil

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
I refer to our expert opinion on the rudder failure due to a hydraulic valve opening, and, following our meeting on 16/05/2013, would like to briefly summarise the main points, as it is difficult to understand the purely technical expert opinion at the level of its minute details.

>> Dem physikalischen Ansatz eines mechanischen Pendels, der Grundlage der Gutachten der Gegenseite ist, kann ich prinzipiell nicht folgen, da es sich ja um ein ***normalgängiges*** Ventil handelte und somit keine freie Bewegung des Hebels möglich war. > I can, essentially, not go along with the physical approach of a mechanical pendulum, which forms the basis for the opponent's expert opinion, as a valve ***opening and closing the regular way*** (???) was involved, and therefore no free movement of the lever was possible.

[Here's the story: two ships collide because of a rudder failure due to a hydraulic valve opening which it shouldn't. There is a lever involved and it gets pretty technical in the course of the dispute in Court, with the two parties' expert opinions being discussed by a third-party expert.]

Discussion

Teresa Reinhardt Jun 25, 2013:
"wie leicht/schwer etwas gängig ist" bedeutet, wie leicht es sich bewegen lässt. Ich würde "sluggishness" in diesem Zusammenhang nicht verwenden.
Sebastian Witte (asker) Jun 25, 2013:
As per the "story" (train of thought) of the document it really is "valve opening and closing with average sluggishness", i.e. one that's in the middle between easy to move and difficult to move.
Sebastian Witte (asker) Jun 25, 2013:
Thank you, Tecton Much appreciated
Chris Foster Jun 24, 2013:
conventionally operating not a standard one, but a conventional one in this specific context.
I have found the word used to describe a normally operating door:Türart: normalgängige, manuelle zweiflüglige Drehflügeltür mit schmalen Flügelbreiten

(Wertangabe für beide Flügel)

Aufschlagrichtung: nach innen
Sebastian Witte (asker) Jun 24, 2013:
No, I don't think they mean standard valve That doesn't make sense to me from the perspective of following the story and based on good technical thinking. Normalgängig is a key expression in terms of the train of thought, I'm almost sure. Also, standard valve doesn't really fly in the context that "und somit [which is indicative of the foregoing being the cause of what follows] keine freie Bewegung des Hebels möglich war".
Heather McCrae Jun 24, 2013:
normal this is just a standard, normal conventional valve, nothing special. just say standard valve
Sebastian Witte (asker) Jun 24, 2013:
A few lines down it says Die erwähnten Rütteltests [pulsator tests, SW] erachte ich durchaus als aufschlussreich, jedenfalls wenn man 3 verschieden schwer-/ leichtgängige Ventile untersucht.

So it does not mean opening and closing the regular way, I guess. Would opening and closing with average sluggishness work then?
Sebastian Witte (asker) Jun 24, 2013:
The ship's natural vibrations play an important part in figuring out how the valve could open. There is an element of resonance there is in this respect which I sadly don't fully get for lack of time. Can't read up on the matter. Anyone?

Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.

I think it just means the valve was set at the standard values
