This is from an agency agreement in which der Vertreter has the right to sell and service the AUFTRAGGEBER's equipment. I don't understand the use of "nach Aufwand" (now it's my turn to ask about it):
Der Vertreter verpflichtet sich:
a.) Die Vorgaben - Marktziele, Inbetriebnahme und Handling - ordnungsgemäß und mit bestem Wissen und Gewissen umzusetzen
b.) Die Eigentumsrechte und Patentrechte - siehe § 9 - im Bezug APPARAT zu wahren
c.) Alle außerhalb des Betriebes und der normalen Abnutzung entstandenen Schäden nach Aufwand der AUFTRAGGEBER zu begleichen. Bei Verlust werden von AUFTRAGGEBER die gesetzlichen Möglichkeiten geltend gemacht

Aufwand -- don't confuse with effort, means cash out of pocket

outlay incurred by the customer(s). Actually, I counsel caution here, because "der Auftraggeber" should IMO read "des Auftraggebers". Unless there is a Typo here somewhere....
