German term

schlank aufgestellt

Comedy show about bankers. I don't understand the meaning of "schlank aufgestellt" here.

Discussion

Klaus Beyer Oct 20, 2021:
May be I am a super minimalist, kommt wohl am nächsten
Steffen Walter Oct 9, 2021:
Afterthought You've obviously closed this question already, but you might also use "streamline/efficiency is my middle name", irrespective of the joke being "accessible" or not.
aykon (asker) Oct 7, 2021:
I'm just going to use "very streamlined". This is as ambiguous as the German and I think he might refer to the business term "streamlining"
aykon (asker) Oct 7, 2021:
I don't understand it, either. The comedian is making fun of bankers and how they talk (with a Preußen-accent) I thought it was maybe something commonly said in those circles. Apparently not :-)
Susan Starling Oct 6, 2021:
I don't necessarily get the joke either from this one paragraph. But it could be that "super schlank aufgestellt" is meant ironically because he lists all these wildly differing positions he's held, with both promotions and demotions, which is rather the opposite of being "schlank aufgestellt" I'd think. It wouldn't refer to his bodily form however due to the use of the word "aufgestellt" - I understand that literally to mean how he views his "setup" or "position" for lack of a better word, specifically his personal setup ("ich"). I think Ramey's on the right track as far as general understanding goes though none of the suggestions with "lean meat" etc. work for me either. I like Phil's "streamlined", maybe something like "first off, I've had a really streamlined career path" (which he has not, apparently). I wouldn't say "streamlined organization" because he seems to be referring to himself personally, i.e. his own career path. That's my initial take anyway, perhaps someone will be inspired :)
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 6, 2021:
Hi Phil He's been pared down often. Lean meat?
philgoddard Oct 6, 2021:
Also, could there be any significance to the fact that he says 'I' rather than 'my company'? Could it be a joke about his body shape?
philgoddard Oct 6, 2021:
I don't get the joke, though it's probably easier to understand from the wider context, but I think Ramey is on the right lines and should post an answer. Maybe 'I come from a very streamlined organization'.

I don't know if there's any significance to the fact that CFM is a demotion.
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 6, 2021:
Hey there Aykon Here's some possibly inspiring kicks if you haven't tried them yet:

exceedingly streamlined, but the character is high up the corporate ladder, so it could refer to the 'thin air' at elevated heights or the 'mean lean' exclusivity at the top.

Proposed translations

For a insurance company with dynamic, linear growth or best management.

"I am running a tight ship."
Es ist auch so interessant, wenn man so übersetzt. Wenn man noch andere Vorschläge hat, würde ich gern wissen.

running a tight ship

"I am running a tight ship."

Compare:
"A well-managed organization, as in The camp director runs a tight ship. This metaphoric term alludes to a ship in which the ropes are taut and by extension the ship is strictly managed. [Second half of 1900s]"

Lean organization:
"A lean organizational structure is a structure that is designed to create more customer value using fewer resources than a traditional organizational structure. ... Members of lean organizations also strive to continuously improve the organization and find ways to eliminate unnecessary waste in the production process."

neutral philgoddard : All the examples I found related to organisations with limited hierarchies. A tight ship means it's well organised, which is not the same thing.

Point taken. I run a lean/slim organization then

I'm lean (executive-level) meat/meat of the leanest sort

This is how I understand it, although the intonation or voicing would say much more. The word LEAN must be in there somewhere, since it's a referral to lean management and this guy has been pared down several times.

It could also mean he works alone, since no one else wants to work with him (having been shifted around several times). Is he a relative of the company owners?

I'm as lean as they come
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I'm not clear what you mean by "I'm lean meat" or "pared down".

Lean refers to streamlined management and judging from the character's career, he's been shifted from position to position (we don't know how old he is). Pared down as in both fatty meat (big boss) and probably salary. Understand?

German term (edited): ich bin erstmal superschlank aufgestellt

To kick-off, I'm the really lean one in the downsized line-up

Aufstellung - pace Phil G. - strikes me as a team line-up, the banker possibly hinting that he is a one-man band.
Example sentence:

Fitness Squad - Team Lean Machine has 1 member. Are you ready to kick off your fitness journey and change your life for the better?
