German term

Burgspiele

German to English Marketing Tourism & Travel
Listed in a description of activites offered by a hotel in Austria. Anyone come across it before? Some kind of games? Or could it be something like "plays staged in castle grounds".

Discussion

Courtney Sliwinski Mar 27, 2008:
Is the hotel a former castle? This could make a difference in how this term is translated. It could be located in a town that has a famous medieval festival, or is a famous medieval town.

open-air theatre

What sort of text are you working on? If it is clear that the hotel is a former castle, I would probably write "open-air theatre" rather than "plays staged in castle grounds" ... is it clear that the events are open air?

the google entries for "burgspiele" would seem to point to theatre rather than jousting ... but as COlin says we don't have much to go on
Note from asker:
yeah that's my problem, very little to gon it. it just appears in a list of activities offered in the area surrounding a hotel in austria, and i don't even kow which hotel as that info isn't provided
shoud read "very little to go on" sorry :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Rowe : Agree that majority of hits seem to refer to plays

agree Andrea Winzer : Burgspiele ist Sommertheater in den Räumlichkeiten einer Burg

jousting (tournament) / medieval festival

Context is everything... Hence confidence level "Low".
Depending on context, it could mean "jousting", or possibly just people dressed up for some kind of "medieval festival".
Peer comment(s):

agree BrigitteHilgner : Jousting - that's probably it. As long as the asker does not provide any further details, I would opt for this.

Thanks!
agree TDfreelance : Spiele could mean a theatrical performance or it could be competition like jousting. Depends on the context

Agree
agree Courtney Sliwinski : Without anymore context, this would be my guess.

Thanks!
agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : with the little context provided by the asker, this would seem the best term here

Thanks!
agree Rebecca Garber : Medieval feste', since everyone knows that an unnecessary -e makes a modern English word a medieval one. (sarcastic reason, but it does appear that many take it seriously.) Add 'ye olde' at the beginning for something 'truly' period...

I thanke ye kindly!
agree David Parry : Depends on context. A number of castles offer "Burgspielen", which are everything from a sort of medieval market, to demonstrations of crafts, to reenactments and perhaps even jousting. For a catch-all term, maybe "medieval fair"?

court theater

I found this as an explanation:
Burgspiel in der Burgruine

Gespielt werden Komödien aus allen Epochen

Aufführungen vor und zum Burgfest

It means they will show theater plays in a medieval setting/with medieval subjects.

medieval games

The XXX Hotel offers its guests participation in medieval games staged in the picturesque ....

Castle festival

It is a you said, performances staged in a castle. In Austria we have many "Festivals", Salzburg Festival, etc.
Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Rowe : Simple and elegant - pretty much covers all possibilities.

Thank you Colin!
agree Heidi Lind : I would use this one as well since we cannot possibly know if this is a jousting festival à la Medieval Times or a music/theater festival (which I am actually leaning towards because otherwise it would have more likely said "Ritterspiele")
