German term

Erkenntnistourist

German to English Art/Literary Tourism & Travel
I'm struggling to find a suitable solution for this term.

Though it doesn't really help for context, here's the whole passage:

Discussion

philgoddard Jul 16, 2013:
That's a good idea.
Daniel Gray (asker) Jul 16, 2013:
I went for 'India enthusiast".
philgoddard Jul 16, 2013:
Any ideas for Indienfahrer?

culture tourist

Perhaps a more modern term. I can't say I would understand what 'spiritual tourist' would mean. 'Spiritual seeker' maybe but in conjunction with tourist, not really.

agree Wendy Streitparth : Good old culture vulture!

Thanks, Wendy; what would they do without us?!/Though Hermann Hesse did obviously have spiritual interests, so spiritual seeker might be better, although this may be intended to be a wider search for knowledge of the cultures involved. I think the latter.

explorative traveler

I'm not sure whether he travelled to gain "Erkenntnis", win insight. In which case I think explorative would work.
But not knowing Hesse, I'm just guessing.

inquiring tourist

or self-inquiring/ reflexive tourist

See link below:
"What readers discover early in the book is that Bruner, a professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is particularly keen on what he calls the “reflexive” or self-inquiring tourist, that is, the one who continually questions how the culture on view is being presented, while at the same time questioning “the biases, egocentrisms and taken-for-granted beliefs” he or she brings to the viewing."

soul-searching tourist

Trying to uncover his true self.... revelation, kharma, meaning of being, best achieved by dreamily staring into empty space while dragging deeply on a joint.
