This is from a guideline on transporting beverages. The sentence in question reads: "Mehrwegkästen sollten so gestaltet sein, dass sie sich in Stapelkanten spielbehaftet stapeln lassen."

agree hazmatgerman (X) : Important here is that a minimum play must be designed for to avoid jamming in actual operation. A tight interlock is not desired.

stacking ledge

I believe they mean the formation of the cases that allows them to interlock and stack.

Many references in the internet refer to this as a "stacking ledge".
Example sentence:

"Wide stacking ledge and anti-slide lock keep stacked bins steady and prevent forward shifting."

Note from asker:
Without any other replies 'stacking ledges' would have got me on the right track (esp via Google image searches)
