: this is used for shading, here the artist has painted some kind of net, but there isn't much context to go on

honeycomb pattern
I'm sticking my neck out here, as there is no image to go on, but as it's a painting I don't think you can call it lattice or mesh, but I do imagine a sort of honeycomb pattern in the arms of the cross.
